Why are LED lights being used in hospitals?

Earlier, the preferable light source for hospitals was fluorescent and incandescent light fixtures.  As the LED technology arrived, healthcare facilities started replacing their dull flickering lights with warmer, human-focused and power-efficient LED lights. These light sources allow medical facilities to provide not only better services to their patients, but also enable them to minimize their energy costs and maintenance costs considerably. It allows hospitals and all other health care facilities to focus more on offering improved services to people instead of spending on bulbs.

LED hospital lights come in many shades of white, which are referred to as the CCT or correlated color temperature with Kelvin as the measuring unit. As the CCT on the Kelvin scale differs, the lights offer illumination in different colors. Some of the different scales of Kelvin and the color of illumination a LED light fixture offers include:

1. The light will be yellow or orange when the CCT lies between 2000 Kelvin and 3500 Kelvin

2. The light will be natural or neutral white when the CCT scale lies between 3500 Kelvin and 5000 Kelvin

3. Users will get bluish-white color light between 5100 Kelvin and 20000 Kelvin

While in the first case the light will look warm white or ultra warm, in the second case the lights will offer paper white illumination.

Hospitals and healthcare centers need to provide their staff and patients with cool white illumination. Hospital lights that come with this specification will offer several health benefits not only to patients but also to their nurses, doctors, and medical attendants. These benefits include:

  • Decreased fatigue
  • Reduced depression
  • Modulated circadian rhythms
  • Improved alertness

Childcare Hospitals that use an LED light fixture can treat a variety of infant conditions, including hyperbilirubinemia, effortlessly and comfortably.  Further, the availability of windows in the place of work and the presence of daylight have been related to amplified satisfaction with the work setting.

Although windows are the best sources of getting daylight, cool white LED lights that come with the right CCT will offer the same beneficial effects as those of natural daylight. Additionally, the lights that come with warmer color temperatures can release the sleep-causing hormones, known as melatonin. It is suitable for patients to have a sound night's sleep but not appropriate for doctors and nurses performing night duties.
